Timing by Run Wild… is truly that, WILD! Every race that I have been to this year that has been timed by these yahoos has been jacked up! Since Donnie gave me a rant invitation I’ll accept… As racers we are required to show up on time, with all the proper gear, follow instructions, study the course, know the USAT rules…. If not we are either not allowed to race or penalized for breaking the rules… So we (the racers) follow the rules and we expect to receive an accurate, safe and properly timed race in return for our entry fee. So they hire a timing company to take care of the timing issue, and that is their ONLY job, to provide accurate timing. In this case they didn’t, during the awards ceremony the announcer is asking people to turn in their awards that were given out incorrectly. That’s only when the mistakes were caught, in some AG’s the mistakes weren’t caught until results were posted online, hours later. So in my simple mind i'm thinking a timing company is a service company, like a caterer, or a mechanic. Simply put, they don’t sell a product they provide a service. If a caterer shows up with food that isn’t satisfactory should they be paid? Would you use them again? If your mechanic returns your car only to leave you sitting on the side of the road looking like a fool would you bring your car back to him? Would you refer him to your friends? So why is bad timing acceptable? We pay our money, we drag our families out of bed in support, and we hang around for hours after a race only to be disappointed.. Final thought, does anyone have a job that allows them to provide an inaccurate result?…
I emailed the race director with my thoughts, if he responds I’ll post it here.

I am NOT the race director for Clear Lake (Greg Pennington) but I do direct…Gateway, Bridgeland, Houston, Monster Mash, and Onurleft Du. As a race director of 5 races 4 of which are well over 1,000 people I can say that this is a VERY important issue to us at Onurmark Productions. I can also say we feel your pain. Gary from Run Wild does try his best but for whatever reason (timing mats being old, glitches, wrong numbers being put in, whatever) it seems as though results do get screwed up a lot. I was told this was because of us on numerous occasions. I will admit that in a few instances our lists we gave him contributed to the results being slightly off. This was in 2009 when we first started. Since then we have also had a problem with inaccurate results that we pay top dollar for. We've learned how to fix things on our end and done everything in our power to do so. The bottom line is that for the amount you AND we pay the results should be as near perfect as one can expect. We have done our part to educate ourselves on how the systems work and how the lists must be presented to the timing company. It didn't fix anything this year and we were/are upset, to say the least.
For that reason Onurmark will be launching our own timing company in 2011. We are in final talks now and it's just a matter of time. Not only will we supply our own events with top notch timing (live results posting to huge LCD monitors) but we will also supply timing to anyone else that needs it as the Houston market is HUGE and can support another timing company easily. Our timers will know the system inside and out, come to all packet pickups and hand chips out after they scan each one as the participant picks it up to ensure all info is correct LONG before the event. We will have custom tents with employees assigned to do nothing else on race day besides fix any issues people may have. Hopefully there are very few. That's what we're working towards in 2011 debuting it at Gateway to the Bay in Kemah.
Stay tuned.

I ate pizza last night, and while stuffing my face, a pizza commercial came on for a different place. That reminded me of this topic.
Competition is the best indicator of a successful business. The ones that provide the better service will grow, while the weaker ones will suffer. Think of the American car industry. In your situation Aaron there is plenty of room in Houston for multiple timing companies, and even more room for accurate timing companies. Wish you the best and thanks for posting in the forum….
What will the new timing company be called? onurankle?

Huge Chip used by RunWild this weekend. It's the size of a Hot Wheels car and has a couple of dangerous edges on it. It cut my finger on the swim when I hit another racer's ankle.
I wasn't aware of timing errors this weekend, but I'm not a fan of the matchboxes we wore.

That sure is a nice perfectly proportioned ankle, who does it belong to?
Imagine catching one of those across the head/face???
Onurleft… timing company name…… “Onurleft…….Ankle” it incorporates Onurleft and you wont have to remind anyone to put them on their left ankle… I know, I'm a genius… All rights reserved…

Greg Masica was the ankle model in this photo. Notice the chip is on the drive side. If loud-laughing ref had been there, Greg would have gotten an earful…
